Hear From an Expert

Hear What Surgeons Are Saying About the ARGOS® Biometer and VERION® Image Guidance

H. John Shammas, MD Medical Director, Shammas Eye Medical Centre

"ARGOS® Biometer passes through almost any cataract. It's a time saver in every single way I can think of! Patients like it because of the speed, I like it because of the accuracy and the ease - it's by far the easiest biometer I've ever used!" - Michael Swearingen, O.D.

Dr. Graham Barrett Consultant Ophthalmologist, Lions Eye Institute and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

Dr. Barrett reflects on recent advancements in cataract surgery planning and discusses how modern devices streamline cataract surgery, for improved efficiency and better patient outcomes.

Advanced Biometry1,2,7,8

The swept-source OCT ARGOS® Biometer with Image Guidance by Alcon® is an innovative solution, designed to enhance your surgical experience and help to achieve better patient outcomes.1,2,7,8

The ARGOS®  Biometer is faster than other market-leading biometers.1-5† With a biometric data capture time of less than 1 second and a higher scanning speed, 50% faster than IOLMaster* 700, the ARGOS® Biometer allows for enhanced efficiency and accuracy of eye measurements.1,9

Auto-capture mode automatically records measurements when the patient is optimally aligned, without requiring any extra steps.

The ARGOS® Biometer captures biometric data of5,10

  • Anterior Chamber Depth (ACD)
  • Keratometry (K)
  • Corneal Diameter / WTW
  • Central Corneal Thickness (CCT)
  • Axial Length (AL)
  • Aqueous Depth (AD)
  • Pupil Size (PD)
  • Lens Thickness (LT)
  • Angle Kappa Coordinates (Px and Py)

The ARGOS® Biometer Provides Higher Acquisition Rates Than Other Market-Leading Biometers1,2,7,8

With SS-OCT Technology and proprietary Enhanced Retina Visualisation mode, the ARGOS® Biometer provides unsurpassed dense cataract penetration and accuracy of axial length acquisition.1,2,7,8

It allows for confidence in refractive outcomes even in the case of grade 4+ cataract patients.12

Enhanced Retina Visualisation mode illustration

A comparison of biometry images captured by the ARGOS Biometer in normal mode and in enhanced retina visualization (ERV) mode. ERV mode reconfigures the internal optics to enhance the signal at the retina by 10 times compared to normal mode.

The ARGOS® Biometer shows significantly higher acquisition rates in grade 4+ cataracts compared to the IOLMaster* 700 and other market-leading biometers, while significantly reducing the need for time-consuming ultrasound biometry.1,2

Comparison of the refractive outcomes in patients with dense nuclear cataract between the ARGOS® Biometer and IOLMaster* 70012

A table comparing the refractive outcomes in patients with nuclear cataracts between the ARGOS Biometer and IOLMaster 700. In low density eyes, the mean absolute error was not statistically different between the ARGOS Biometer and IOLMaster 700. In medium and high density eyes, mean absolute error was significantly lower with the ARGOS Biometer compared to IOLMaster 700.

The ARGOS® Biometer’s SS-OCT-enhanced keratometry helps with the acquisition of accurate measurements

The ARGOS® Biometer utilises SS-OCT-enhanced keratometry with angle-to-angle, cornea-to-retina, real-time OCT guidance, allowing the user to monitor patient alignment and fixation and helping acquisition of accurate measurements every time.2,13

Correlation of keratometry measurements between ARGOS® Biometer and competitor biometers2,13

A bar graph comparing the correlation of keratometry measurements across three different biometers. The ARGOS Biometer’s keratometry measurements showed high correlation with IOLMaster 700, IOLMaster 500, and Lenstar biometers.

The ARGOS® Biometer keratometry measurements show high correlation with IOLMaster* 500, IOLMaster* 700 and LENSTAR*.2,13.

“The ARGOS® [Biometer] uses segmented method to measure the eye - it measures each segment of the eye in its precise velocity. That makes a difference especially in very long and very short eyes.” - H. John Shammas, MD, Medical Director, Shammas Eye Medical Centre

A table comparing the refractive error in eyes measured with the ARGOS Biometer compared to eyes whose axial length was calculated using the simulated CRI method. A higher percentage of eyes measured with the ARGOS Biometer were within 0.50D of target refraction.
